What's In Our Name?
Why we choose the name the Way Christian Fellowship. Jesus answered, "I am the Way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
“Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.” Acts 9: 1 (Paul speaking) “However, I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a follower of the Way, which they (religious leaders) call a sect.” Acts 24:14
the Way • Jesus is the Way and this is who we follow • was the name for the first group of people (early Church) who followed Christ • people will ask what is "the Way" and then we can tell them about who we are
Christian • we are identified as a Christian Church
Fellowship • we are a fellowship, a band of friends • we will be a Church built on relationships • our focus is on community
St. Augustine said humility is first, second and third in Christianity. In fact, the early Christians were so self-effacing that they refused to call their movement after its founder. Outsiders called them Christians. They referred to themselves as "people of the Way." |
